Ramjet Tips and Tricks - Using Terminal

Why on earth would I use Terminal?

Terminal is not an application that many macOS users dare to open. For those that are more technical and understand what these commands mean "ls" "cd" and "sudo" then you need to move on from this email. For those that have a curiosity as to the merits of using Terminal on some limited basis, read on!

Impress your techy friends!

From Spotlight in macOS Sierra, search for Terminal and open the application. Once the application opens, a window should open and you should see the name of your machine followed by a semi-colon and tilde. That is followed by your user name. At the command prompt, type what you see in red below.

This should run Star Wars - Episode IV in ASCII characters. I mean the entire movie, not just one cute scene. Show it to your geeky friends and you will instantly bond.

How to change your screenshot format to JPG

If you like to take screenshots on your Mac of cool images that you plan on stealing (admit it... you do it), then it's likely you may want to change your default from PNG format to JPG format. That can be easily done in Terminal with the following command:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

That won't take effect until you reboot your machine. And of course, you can set your default to TIFF, GIF or PDF or set it back to PNG.

Change Preview's annoying default setting

I find it annoying that whenever I open an image with Preview, it automatically opens all of my most recently accessed images. With Terminal, you can change that default setting! At the command prompt, just enter the following:

defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
Quicktime is another application that acts like Preview. Here's the command for that one:
defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
This should hopefully get you started in making good use of Terminal. Feel free to share your own favorite Terminal command with us.
